Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) Has a $42 Billion Anthropic Test

What happened

Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) has a financing relationship with Anthropic that goes beyond chip supply. Reuters reported Thursday that Anthropic can access up to $42 billion tied to leases of computing infrastructure built around Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) technology.

That does not mean Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) has already handed over $42 billion. The public quarterly filing says the customer may issue convertible promissory notes under certain conditions. The money must fund lease obligations, and no notes had been issued as of August 2. The filing did not name the customer. Reuters connected it to Anthropic through the AI lab's confidential IPO prospectus.

Why it matters

The $42 billion ceiling equals 1.75 times Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO)'s $23.975 billion cash balance on August 2. That comparison shows scale, not current exposure. It would be wrong to treat the ceiling as cash already lent, a loss reserve or a liability due today.

A separate backstop is more directly about downside. Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) disclosed maximum potential liability of about $29 billion after all applicable AI racks are deployed, or 1.21 times its August cash. The backstop rises as racks arrive and falls as the customer pays. In a default, the company says its liability depends on 85% of outstanding lease amounts less the value recovered from the racks. It can also assume a lease or arrange an asset sale.

As of August 2, Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) had made no backstop payments and recorded an immaterial fair value for the obligation. Financial partners fund the racks while Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) provides the technology. The headline is not a clean measure of balance-sheet risk.

The bullish reading is real: Anthropic represents large, multi-year demand for custom AI accelerators and networking. The April filing described roughly 3.5 gigawatts of Anthropic capacity beginning in 2027. The obstacle is that product demand, customer financing and credit exposure now depend on the same counterparty.

What's next

The next quarterly filing should show whether any notes were issued, whether the backstop's fair value or payments changed, and how much cash the financing structure requires. A public Anthropic prospectus would also let investors verify the customer-side terms directly.

Until then, the investment case is mixed. The arrangement strengthens demand visibility for Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO), but it also makes cash conversion and counterparty risk more important than the chip-order headline.
