What happened
Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (NASDAQ: VRTX) reported third-quarter revenue up 12% to $3.44 billion from a year earlier. It also raised its full-year revenue guidance.
The company now expects 2026 revenue of $13.15 billion to $13.25 billion, up from $13.1 billion to $13.2 billion. Third-quarter revenue grew 11.8% from $3.08 billion in the third quarter of 2025.
Profit moved the other way on a GAAP basis. Net income was $653.6 million, down from $1.1 billion a year earlier. Vertex says the drop is mainly from expenses tied to the Crinetics Pharmaceuticals acquisition, which closed Sept. 1.

Where the revenue growth came from
Cystic fibrosis (CF) medicines still carry the quarter. Total CF product revenue was $3.27 billion, compared with $3.04 billion a year earlier. ALYFTREK reached $705.8 million from $247.0 million, while TRIKAFTA/KAFTRIO slipped to $2.44 billion from $2.65 billion.
U.S. revenue rose 10% to $2.17 billion. Revenue outside the U.S. rose 16% to $1.27 billion. Vertex credits strong CF demand in both, plus a favorable foreign exchange impact abroad. Full-year guidance still includes about 150 basis points of benefit from exchange rates, net of hedging.
Newer products are small but growing fast. CASGEVY brought in $99 million, versus $17 million a year earlier. JOURNAVX brought in $58 million, versus $20 million. PALSONIFY, which came with Crinetics, added $10 million in September. Guidance includes $500 million or more from CASGEVY and JOURNAVX combined and $40 million to $50 million from PALSONIFY for the year.

What the costs did to profit
Costs explain why revenue growth did not reach adjusted profit. GAAP R&D, acquired in-process R&D and SG&A expenses together were $2.2 billion, against $1.5 billion a year earlier. Non-GAAP, they rose by less, from $1.3 billion a year earlier. Vertex cites the renal franchise build-out led by povetacicept, the addition of Crinetics and the JOURNAVX launch.
The GAAP figure includes compensation and transaction expenses tied to the Crinetics deal. That one-time item is roughly half a billion dollars. Non-GAAP net income was $1.2 billion in both third quarters. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $4.76, against $4.80.
Vertex also raised its expense guidance. It now sees non-GAAP expenses of about $6.0 billion for 2026, up from $5.65 billion to $5.75 billion. GAAP expense guidance is $7.15 billion to $7.2 billion, up from $6.3 billion to $6.45 billion.
Why it matters
OptimistFi has argued that Vertex creates value by turning cash from high-margin medicines into R&D and selective deals. This quarter shows both halves of that loop. On balance it strengthens the case.
The deal half is large. Vertex bought Crinetics for a total equity value of about $10.0 billion. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities fell to $9.8 billion on Sept. 30 from $12.3 billion on Dec. 31, 2025. Vertex blames the drop mainly on $9.0 billion of net cash used to buy Crinetics and repurchase stock, partly offset by $4.5 billion borrowed under a term loan.
The product half held up, with a small slip. OptimistFi calculates GAAP gross margin, which is revenue less cost of sales as a share of revenue, at 84.7%. That is down from 86.5% a year earlier. Cost of sales rose to $526.1 million from $414.8 million.
The caveats are earnings quality and execution. GAAP profit fell, and Vertex says the Crinetics deal brought higher interest expense and lower interest income. The company also warns that it may not realize the expected benefits from acquisitions, or meet its 2026 guidance.
What's next
The nearest test is Nov. 30. That is the FDA target action date for povetacicept's application for accelerated approval in IgA nephropathy, which is under priority review. Approval would make it the first product in Vertex's emerging nephrology franchise, which the company calls its fifth commercial pillar. A delay or a decision not to approve would weaken the case that the renal spending pays off.
Vertex expects to share interim results from the VX-670 GALILEO study in myotonic dystrophy in the second half of 2026. It expects AMPLITUDE interim data on inaxaplin in early 2027. Phase 3 results for suzetrigine in diabetic peripheral neuropathy are due in mid-2027.
